I have just returned from three days of working with the boys and men of Haderslev Drengekor.

It has been a really wonderful experience; Henrik, the energetic and imaginative Director of Music at the Cathedral, is steadily developing up a tremendous team of musicians and choirs, based upon the

excellent foundation created by his eminent predecessor at the Cathedral, Svend Prip.Working with the singers in the choir was an absolute delight. They are all very well-prepared and well-disciplined; they sing with great enthusiasm and are extremely keen to learn. Particular memories include working with the very enthusiastic top line of 30 boy trebles and the distinctive group of altos, comprising four boys with changing voices and four impressive young counter-tenors, a type of voice which one always hopes to see in any male or mixed choir!  The tenors and basses were also efficient and conscientious in all that they did.

The series of workshops with the boys and men culminated in a great concert in Haderslev Cathedral. At this concert, the choir of boys and men produced their best performances of my time with them - vibrant singing in ’Their sound is gone out from Handel’s ‘Messiah’, sensitive phrasing and control in the less well-known but very attractive 16th century English motet ‘In manus tuas’ by Sheppard and real energy and rhythmic precision in an ‘Amen’ by the Danish composer Gade. The concert ended with a version of the hymn ‘Praise my soul, the King of heaven’ sung at the back of the Cathedral accompanied by the magnificent Marcusssen organ - the sound of the choir in the final verse backed by the fabulous organ was something very special!

I would like to thank Henrik warmly for inviting me to lead these workshops; the whole trip was a most enjoyable experience and I can strongly recommend to anyone that you go and hear Henrik’s choirs.  It is so good to see such a fine tradition being maintained and developed in this way and there clearly are some very exciting times ahead at Haderslev!

"Glimrende stemmemateriale, utsøkt repertoar og rene, klare stemmer!" Dette er noen av tilbakemeldingene Sverre Valen, kjent som dirigent og grunnlegger av Sandefjord Jentekor, gav etter konserten med Haderselv Drengekor.

Her sammen med korets dirigent
Henrik Skærbæk Jespersen:.

Efter koncerten takker Sverre Valen (th) Henrik Skærbæk Jespersen (tv) for en god koncert.
